To have sickle cell anemia, a person must inherit two sickle hemoglobin genes, one from each parent. Sickle cell anemia arises from a mutation in the hemoglobin gene that causes the blood cells to assume an abnormal shape. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited (genetic) disorder seen most commonly in people of african ancestry. Sickle cell anemia is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, which means that both copies of the gene in each cell have mutations. The disorder is caused by a single base pair change in one of the genes that codes for hemoglobin, the blood protein that carries oxygen.
